Which bus driver test do you need: hiring assessment or licence?
Identify whether an invitation concerns recruitment, commercial licensing or employer training, and choose the correct official source before buying study material.

Start with the sender and the task
Look at who sent the invitation, the job or examination reference, and the action requested. An employer asking you to complete an online assessment is a different starting point from a licensing authority scheduling a knowledge or road test. Do not choose study material based only on the words “bus driver test” in a search result.
Make a one-line description: “This invitation is from ___, for ___, and asks me to complete ___ by ___.” If you cannot fill in a field from the message and official notice, verify it through the stated contact process before making assumptions.
Recruitment methods can differ even within one region
The TTC transit operator recruitment process identifies cognitive, written road-safety and other selection stages. An applicant preparing for one stage should not assume that another stage’s instructions apply. The current invitation and recruitment page need to be read together.
Published MTA notices also illustrate why exact references matter: the MTA Bus Operator Exam 6600 notice describes a multiple-choice examination, while the MTA MaBSTOA Bus Operator Exam 6100 notice describes a different selection method involving licence verification and list placement. These are document-specific examples, not announcements of open application periods. A notice number is more useful than a generic claim that everyone takes “the MTA test.”
Licensing has its own official material
For U.S. applicants, FMCSA: Commercial driver licensing for drivers describes commercial licence classes, endorsements and entry-level training requirements. Use that federal information with your state’s current licensing instructions and the employer’s notice. A general-skills practice quiz is not a substitute for required commercial-driver training, examinations or endorsements.
For a Canadian application, locate the relevant provincial or territorial licensing authority through its official government website. Record the licence or endorsement named in the employer’s posting and when it must be held. This article does not determine your legal eligibility or prescribe a licence class for a particular job.
Create two separate study folders
In a recruitment folder, keep the vacancy, invitation, assessment instructions and any employer-provided preparation material. In a licensing folder, keep the applicable official handbook, booking instructions and training information. Add a third folder if the employer later supplies its own training documents.
This organization avoids a common mismatch: spending all available time on licence facts when the immediate invitation asks for a different skill, or treating a practice numeracy score as evidence that licensing is complete. Each folder should have its own next action and source.
Use a fictional decision exercise
Imagine you receive an email referencing job application 123 and asking for a timed reading assessment. Your next step is to check that employer’s instructions about the reading assessment. Now imagine a second notice from the licensing authority asking you to book a practical examination. That creates a separate preparation task even if both relate to the same career goal.
If an employer offers a training pathway, verify exactly what it includes, the entry conditions and the timing. Do not infer payment, reimbursement or eligibility from the word “training.” Save the relevant official wording and ask about unresolved details.

Common questions
Does a TransitPrep practice score satisfy a licence requirement?
No. It is a result on independent practice material and does not complete any licensing, training or employer requirement.
Can I use another applicant’s notice to identify my assessment?
Use your own current job or examination reference and invitation. Another applicant may be in a different recruitment round, role or selection process.
