No commercial driving experience is needed: Halifax Transit provides paid training with classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. (source)
Testing is in person: an essential skills test of reading, writing and comprehension (minimum 5 Canadian Language Benchmarks points) and a 20–30 minute tablet-based assessment. (source)
Candidates who pass the interview take a CORE (Commercial On-Road Evaluation), a behind-the-wheel assessment of about 45 minutes. (source)
After a conditional offer, candidates must get an air brake endorsement, pass the written Nova Scotia Class 2 exam and obtain Standard Emergency First Aid with AED; Halifax Transit reimburses these costs. (source)

Bus operator written tests usually check three skills: reading a route map, knowing traffic signs (see the Nova Scotia Driver’s Handbook: signs, pavement markings and work zones), and knowing where major Halifax landmarks are.
