What GRT asks for

  • GRT hires part-time bus operators who work up to 32 hours a week; full-time operator openings are filled from part-time positions. (source)
  • Applicants need a Grade 12 education or equivalent and must be at least 21 years old. (source)
  • Applicants need either a valid Class B licence with at least 2 years of driving and customer service experience, or a Class G (including A, C, D, E or F) licence with at least 3 years of driving and customer service experience and eligibility to obtain a Class B licence. (source)

What to practise

Bus operator written tests usually check three skills: reading a route map, knowing traffic signs (see the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook: signs), and knowing where major Kitchener–Waterloo landmarks are.

Landmarks worth knowing

Learn the street, not just the name. Passengers ask which bus goes to a hospital or campus, and the useful answer starts with the street it’s on.
