TTC bus operator test: how to prepare

What TTC asks for

  • Transit operator applicants need a non-probationary Ontario Class G driver’s licence in good standing. (source)
  • A Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or its recognized equivalent is required. (source)
  • The TTC asks for a minimum of one to two years of face-to-face customer service experience. (source)
  • Operators must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, split shifts, weekends and holidays. (source)

What to practise

Bus operator written tests usually check three skills: reading a route map, knowing traffic signs (see the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook: signs), and knowing where major Toronto landmarks are.

Landmarks worth knowing

Learn the street, not just the name. Passengers ask which bus goes to a hospital or campus, and the useful answer starts with the street it’s on.
